The Antique World on the Petersburg Stage

An exhibition organized by the State Hermitage with participation from the St Petersburg State Museum of Theatre and
Musical Arts has opened in the Foyer of the Hermitage Theatre and in the Raphael Loggias.
- The Art of Western European Manuscripts in the 5th - 16th Centuries

The State Hermitage and the National Library of Russia jointly present an exhibition of Western European
manuscripts from the 5th - 16th centuries (Rotonda, Arab Hall)
The passion for collecting manuscripts in Russia dates back to the reign of Catherine the Great. This was the
time when collections were assembled by the Counts Stroganov, Princes Golitsyn and Yusupov, and by the secretary
of the Russian embassy in France, P.P. Dubrovsky. During his period of service abroad, Peter Petrovich Dubrovsky
(1754-1816) á®llected around 400 medieval manuscripts. In 1805 he donated the manuscripts to the Imperial Public
Library, where his collection became the basis of the "Manuscript Depository."

The exhibition will show the grand perspective of the development of the Russian ecclesiastical art and
architecture within more than two centuries - from Peter the Great to Nicholas II - through evolution of
art styles and political ideas connected with the religious traditions of the country.

The exhibition is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Victory Day and includes more than 200 works of
painting, graphics and sculpture from the Russian Museum collection created during the period from 1941 to 1945.
